It is more like Halloween here than in California - the Autumn leaves are just beautiful, and in Halloween colors too! Pumpkins on the porches blending in with the colors of the leaves on the ground - beautiful. I took some pictures and will figure out how to put some of them here.

Time is getting short to do elaborate costumes. You may want to check out the quick and easy Halloween costume ideas. I went as a nerd one year. Easy costume. The hardest part was getting a good ink stain at the bottom of the shirt pocket. Just putting a felt pen stuffed into the bottom of the pocket didn’t do the job. I had to open up the pen and squeeze the ink out to get a bad enough stain to show easily.

My camera broke the other day so I’m going to borrow a friend’s digital camera for Halloween. That way I’ll still be able to get Halloween costume pictures for the site. Remember, if you have costume pictures you want to share, I would love to get them!

Last night I got the Halloween candy to hand out. Costco is still very well stocked with both candy and costumes.

I talked with my daughter Jane this evening and she has decided what to be for Halloween. She got excited when I suggested that she go as a “woman going as a man going as woman”. Her creative juices started to flow … “Let’s see…, I’ll need a bad wig … I wonder if there is a thrift shop around here.” She rejected the idea of going as “Mr. T going as Dolly Parton”.

Over the years her costumes have tended to be unique, or at least unusual. One year she and her brother William both went as “partially cloudy”. All of those ideas, and many more are on the Costumes Anyone Could Wear page at www.n6st.org/costumes-anyone-could-wear.htm

Thats all for tonight. More tomorrow.

Well, it is getting close to Halloween. you may not have time to get to a Halloween store, or order a costume or accessories on-line. So, what do you do? Look around where you are and see what is available that could be adapted to costume use. Do you have paper and tape? What could you make with that? A hat? A mask? Gloves with gauntlets? There are lots of things you can do with just paper and tape. If you also have colored pencils or pens the possibilities are almost endless. For more ideas check out the Quick and Easy Halloween Costumes page at http://www.n6st.org/quick-and-easy-halloween-costumes.htm

That may get you going out on Halloween ready to trick or treat!

When I was a kid, Halloween was my 2nd or 3rd favorite holiday. My Mom made our costumes since she could sew. As I’ve been watching the searches for costumes, the second most popular one surprised me - Captain Crunch. For someone who can sew (or use fabric glue) this should be a reasonably easy costume to make. I’ll do some research to see if the local seasonal Halloween costume store has Captain Crunch costumes, or anything that could be adapted. The basic costume is simple - Blue pants, a big blue jacket decorated with gold ribbon and a Commodore’s hat with a big gold letter “C” on it. I report what I find.

There have been a bunch of searches also for Strawberry Shortcake costumes. I’ll check into that one also.

Harry Potter is still a very popular search and it is an easy costume to buy or make. Black glasses, hair over the forehead and the lightning shaped scar and you are just about there. Add a cape and you have it made. If you want to carry something a broom would be a good choice.

More soon.

For me, Halloween is my second or third favorite holiday of the year. When I was a kid, most of my costumes were homemade since my Mom sewed. There is nothing like the quality of a hand sewed costume! A vast majority of the costumes are now purchased rather than made at home since people’s lives have become so much busier since I was little.

As I’ve mentioned before the most popular search is Boots the Monkey, but commercially made Boots costumes are hard to find. I’ve seen some on eBay, and there is a link at the bottom of the Boots the Monkey page to a site where the woman who runs the site offers handmade Boots and Swiper the Fox costumes. Time is probably short to order a custom made costume.

I suspect there will be a lot of Jack Sparrow’s knocking on the door this Halloween. There are lots of people also looking for Strawberry Shortcake costumes, so I’ll see if I can locate a source for both of them. I’ll not only make a trip to the local seasonal Halloween stores, but traditional year-around costume shops to see what I can find.

I’ll report what I find!

The second most popular search for costume ideas that I’ve seen so far is for “Captain Crunch”. It is way below the number of searches for Boots the Monkey, but still in the top 10.

This costume might be available at Halloween costume stores, I haven’t gone to look yet. If you want to make it yourself, a trip to a fabric or craft supply may yield goodies to make gold braid and the appulets (I think that is what they are called) that go on the jacket shoulders. Get some fancy gold ribbon to decorate the jacket and hat. You will probably have to make the hat out of cardboard or styrofoam to get the right shape, then cover it with blue fabric. The gold ribbon can be used to make the big “C” that is on the hat.

That is it for now.
